If you’re unsure of how to change your DNS (domain name server) to HostGator, don’t worry. The process is actually quite simple and only takes a minute to do.

Before you begin to use your HostGator web hosting account, you’ll need to update the DNS on the domain name you’re intending to use. One thing to remember is after changing the DNS, the propagation may take 24-48 hours to complete.

While each domain registrar has a different way of doing DNS updates, they’re all fairly similar. After activating your Host Gator webhosting plan, you’ll receive a welcome email with the DNS settings for your account.

The name servers that you’re assigned will be similar to the following:

ns1.hostgator.com

ns2.hostgator.com

Take note of these two settings and login to your domain name registration account. Next, simply browse to the domain name settings area, select the domain name that you wish to update, unlock it, and set the name servers to the custom settings above.

After making a change to one of your domains, always remember to lock your domain.
